A brief explanation about space Tourism

January 7, 2025

Darkness, infinity and unknown: the space is still pretty scary. We are hearing and reading about the space everyday: Space X, Blue Origin, Mars colonization… The space sounds more familiar every day and maybe the distance reduction between earth and space through new spaces technologies, will change the mind of the youngest and might fulfil the expectations of the older space dreamers. In any case, space tourism is already a small reality, that surely will become more popular with the next generations.

Here following, the four modes of transportations used nowadays by civilians, from the cheapest to the most expensive:

  • Parabolic spaceflight
  • Jet spaceflight
  • Sub-orbital spaceflight
  • Orbital spaceflight

Few of the upon-mentioned options have been open to the civilians since decades, but the social convention hasn´t been much opend. Regardless, the space experts are working on the tourism questions too. Firstly, the route must be physically and emotionally handled by common people. In fact, the first step is to distinguish between civilians (leisure space tourists) and astronauts/militaries in charge of space missions (which can be called business space travellers). Secondly, the leisure space tourists must be prepared with a very quick training. They need to know the essential related notions regarding security on board and no gravity experience, depending on the form of space transportation. The relevant information must be suitable for the persons concerned.

And what about the price? The price-range is between many thousand dollars to millions. The pricing has different ranges by the means of transportation and by the space experience. Like all kind of businesses, the increment of the requests will decrease the price.
Let´s take the air flight business as example. At the beginning of the twentieth century, people were still sceptical about the frequent use of airplanes. The first flight ever, with a duration of only 12 seconds, has been an incredible news all around the world. Afterwards, thanks to the technology, the purpose that people would be able to flight began very common within few years. Since the first flight in 1914, the airplanes business grew up very fast. Nevertheless, there is a huge distinction to do between the air flights and the space flights: booking an airplane is a necessity to move faster from one city to another, whereas the leisure space flights are currently a one-off experience.

In conclusion, the path is still long to see space flights saleable every day. Hence, the improvement of the space marketing can be useful to share interest and information, in the view to change the society`s mentality and to transform the space tourism in a more accessible activity.
